A high court judge in Grenada has issued an arrest warrant for a Grenadian-born attorney-at-law who has been disbarred in Canada. Court officials told GRENADA TODAY that Justice Kenneth Benjamin issued the warrant on January 13, 2005 for Lenus Walker to be taken into custody in connection with thousands of dollars owed to the developers of Classical Farms (Grenada) Limited located in the St. Patrick's area. One of the principal figure in the company is Carlyle John, a former Permanent Secretary for Education in Grenada, while another is Joachim St. John, a construction builder by profession. Walker is said
to be owing EC$250, 000 to the developers for monies entrusted to him
to engage in a series of development projects in St. Patrick's. In the 1980's Walker made an unsuccessful attempt to be admitted to practice law in the Grenada courts but the application was turned down based on his disbarred status in Canada. A well-placed official said that Walker allegedly kept the money handed over to him by the John group of developers for himself and did not use it for the intended purpose. He spoke of company officials retaining the services of female barrister-at-law, Celia Clyne-Edwards to institute legal proceedings against Walker. Clyne-Edwards was able to obtain a default judgement against Walker and Justice Benjamin signed the order for the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) to arrest and commit Walker to the Richmond Hill prison in connection with the monies owed. The source said that Walker is currently in England and tryng to broker a deal that would to allow him to return home without the police taking him into custody. The disbarred lawyer was forced to miss the funeral of his mother which took place on Tuesday at the Grand Bras cemetery in St. Andrew's. Court officials have said that Walker had put forward a proposal to make an initial payment of EC$50-$60, 000 within the next few days to Edwards in order to get the arrest and committal warrant issued against him by Justice Benjamin overturned. The proposal also
calls for the rest of the money to be paid within the next six months. |
