Police in Grenada are said to be continuing their investigation into the death of a ten year old girl who was electrocuted at a Seventh Day Adventist social gathering in St. Patrick's last Saturday. Police officials have given the name of the dead child as Shereen Hypolite of Mt. Rose, St. Patrick's. Reports reaching GRENADA TODAY indicate that the Seventh-day Adventist members and friends at La Fortune were at a social gathering at the Church when the incident occurred. Sources told this newspaper that young Hypolite lost her life after she came into contact with an iron pole that was holding up a tent where the activity was taking place. Police are said to be working on the theory that the child might have come into contact with the electricity wire after a line was cut to place a bulb in order for the tent to be properly lit. A source said that the line was no longer used and so it was taped and placed on the pole. GRENADA TODAY was told that Hypolite was electrocuted while playing with another youngster who told her that he got shocked when he touched the pole. There are reports that when the young girl touched the pole she was thrown to the ground. She was rushed to the St. George's General Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. A statement from the SDA Church said that on the night of Saturday, May 28 there was a social gathering of the Church at La. Fortune in which two young children were playing with each other. It said that they came into contact with an iron pole resulting in the girl getting electrocuted and the boy being hospitalised. The SDA statement mourned the loss of "their sister" and expressed condolences to the family and relatives of the deceased. When this newspaper contacted the Grenada Electricity Services Ltd. (GRENLEC) Wednesday, Communications Manager Zarah Chase told this newspaper that the problem causing the electrocution at La Fortune is internal to the site operators. She said that GRENLEC gave a safe temporary supply to the applicant and that the Meter installation was done is in keeping with Grenlec Standards Chase said that no report was made to the company in connection with the incident. Media Consult Troy Garvey told this newspaper that the police are awaiting the results of the autopsy to determine the cause of death as part of their investigation. He said they are also continuing their interviews of witnesses after which they are expected to present their report to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution for review. |
