A Trinidadian woman who appeared before Chief Magistrate Patricia Mark on Monday, on charges of fraud has been remanded in custody to the richmond Hill prison.

According to reports reaching GRENADA TODAY, the suspect, 39 year old Geer Callender who operates the Premiere Ecological Construction company at Grand Anse in St. George's, was taken in police custody last Friday, where she was charged with three counts of Fraud.

Callender who is reported to have American status is said to be the person behind Headly Trading. At the time of her arrest Police said she was residing at Westerhall in St. David's.

Sources indicated that she ran into problems with the law after issuing a few bounced checks to a few local companies in the south of the island. The matter was brought to the attention of the police and a joint investigation was undertaken by officers attached to the Criminal Investigation Unit of the South St. George Police Station and the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).

The investigation later led to the arrest of the suspect whom according to investigators is owing the Government of Grenada thousands of dollars. The suspect was denied bail on her first court appearance by Chief Magistrate Mark who remanded her to prison until her next Court appearance on July 18. During her arraignment, she was represented by attorney-at-Law, Neil Noel.

Meanwhile one of the persons closely associated with the case told this newspaper that the amount of money involved is approximately 1 million dollars EC. The source indicated that the police are working on the theory that the suspect and others saw Grenada as providing "a window of opportunity" after the island was almost flattened by Hurricane Ivan last September.
