The St. Lucia Credit Union League (STLCUL) has donated $28,000.00 to their counterpart, the Grenada Co-operative Credit Union League (GCCUL) which is expected to use the money to assist members who suffered losses during the passage of hurricane Ivan in September.

Director of the Caribbean Confederation of Credit Union (CCCU) Stanford Simon took receipt of the cheque during a visit last week to Castries. Simon told GRENADA TODAY that the money was raised during September and October last year through direct donations from the different Credit Unions as well as individual contributions from members.

Simon, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the GCCUL Disaster Committee disclosed that the SLCU also donated over EC $24,000.00 worth of food items to Grenada in the immediate aftermath of the hurricane. The CCCU Director stated that the entire contribution of STLCUL since September 7 is worth EC$ 53,637.00.
Simon told GRENADA TODAY that the money will go directly to the Co-operative Credit Union League Disaster Funds for distribution among the Credit Unions in the country.

He said that whenever the St. Lucia Coast Guard visited Grenada post Ivan, they were the recipient of tons of supplies from their counterparts in Castries. This is not the first assistance given to GCCUL by regional counterparts in the aftermath of Ivan.

A cheque worth $EC25,000.00 was donated last month by the St. Kitts Credit Union League as well as TT$1 million from the movement in Trinidad. St. Kitts has also promised to send a team of skilled persons such as carpenters and masons to Grenada to help Credit Unions in the reconstruction effort.
