The St. Joseph's Convent, St.George's has launched its Renovation Fund Appeal for the rebuilding, repair and refurbishment of its six structural buildings in St. George's that were damaged during Hurricane Ivan.

Organisers of the fund disclosed that they will need in the region of EC$2.5 million to rebuild the school. Local organisers Brenda Bruno and Ursula Williams pointed out that the first fund-raiser was held at a Parent/Teacher Association meeting held after the passage of the hurricane.

The sum of $1,200.00 was collected. An account was later opened at the Grenada Co-operative Bank with $5,000. There are also accounts in banks in Canada, London, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and St. Kitts.
The organisers are appealing to past pupils and well wishers of the school to donate whatever they can, so that this noble institution can get the rebuilding process underway.

The objective is to have the buildings completed for the new academic school year. Persons in Grenada wishing to make monetary donations can do so at the Grenada Co-operative Bank Ltd A/C# 100048535.

St. Joseph's Convent was founded in 1779 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny, a Religious Order of women. It is a missionary oriented organisation, and is committed to the liberation and development of people.

The Convent, an all girls Catholic Secondary school was established in 1875. Presently on register there are 700 plus students with a teaching administrative and ancillary staff of 50 persons. The six buildings making up the institution were severely damaged during the passage of hurricane Ivan which led to the suspension of classes and the introduction of a shift system for students.

Clases resumed with the use of tents and tarpaulins supplied by UNICEF & USAID through the Ministry of Education and the yeoman service rendered by the Venezuelan Government who helped in the clean-up operation.
