Opposition member of Parliament, Peter David is questioning the Government's motives to appoint Jamaican-born lawyer Hugh Wildman as the next Attorney General of Grenada when the current holder, Raymond Anthony has another year left on his two year contract. According to David, the Keith Mitchell-led New National Party (NNP) Government is prepared to pay Anthony over EC$100, 000.00 to get him to end his contract and vacate the AG's office for Wildman. He made the statement Sunday night at a public meeting of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) held in Gouyave, St. John's. David, the M.P For the Town of St. George said there are many people in Grenada who cannot understand why Prime Minister Mitchell is so keen on hiring the controversial Wildman for the top judicial job. David told the large gathering: "He (Mitchell) needs Wildman bad to hold down the briefcase inquiry. Keith Mitchell is running from the briefcase but he cannot get away from that because he done admit to the crime already and all we waiting for is sentencing". "I don't mind who they appoint Attorney General, I know who we don't want them to appoint as Attorney General and I don't care who they appoint but they just not appointing Wildman in this country", he said. Prime Minister Mitchell has consistently denied charges of wrong doing, admitting that he received "approximately $US15, 000.00" from Resteiner for the purpose of covering the expenses of a trip by a Grenada delegation to several European States and Kuwait. David, a lawyer by profession, reminded the crowd of Wildman's response when a delegation from the NDC including its Political Leader, Tillman Thomas visited the Police to present evidence for the lawmen to launch a probe into possible wrong-doing on the part of the Prime Minister. He spoke of Wildman, a Special Advisor to the Police, being part of the welcoming delegation headed by then Police Commissioner, Fitzroy Bedeau. "We handed over the evidence to the Police, they gave it to Wildman. As soon as that happened he (Wildman) turn around and threatened to lock (up) our leader for bringing the evidence to the Police. "Wildman wanted to lock up the political leader of our party because he gave the evidence against Mitchell to the police to investigate Mitchell. "Well he (Wildman) should have done just that. He should have locked up our leader, let he see what Grenadians are made off and we dear Hugh Wildman to lock up our leader and he will see what Grenada is made off. The opposition M.P chided Dr. Mitchell for having no respect for the Grenadian people by attempting to appoint the controversial Wildman to the A.G post. "We are going to struggle to ensure that we do not have an Attorney General that is non impartial. "We have to
understand that this struggle is going to be long and hard but do not
give up (because) you can see freedom and victory at the end of the
tunnel. |
