The Government of Grenada will be giving awards to persons, groups and organisations that have performed outstandingly during and in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan. This was disclosed at a recent press briefing on plans for Grenada's 31st Independence Celebrations to be held on Monday. Minister of Tourism, Brenda Hood said that the National Independence Award ceremony to be held February 24 at the Grenada Trade Centre will highlight outstanding persons who have given selflessly during and after the passage of the hurricane. "We really want to recognise those persons, who have given selflessly, who have done acts of heroism, who have been a good neighbour in housing people who lost their homes after the passage of Ivan....", she said. According to Greenidge, some persons housed as many as 30 people in their homes, feeding and clothing them for more than three weeks. "They need to be recognised", she remarked. The Ministry is inviting persons to nominate individuals in their community that they feel fit the criteria of a good neigbour to make them eligible for the award. It was disclosed that in order to qualify in the Provision of Shelter category, persons must have provided shelter, food and clothing to at least one family (who are not relatives of the nominee) for a period of two weeks or more. Another category to be awarded are persons or organisations who would have provided service in the areas of transport, provision of equipment, clean up campaigns, road clearance, work brigades (rebuilding of homes) and other such voluntary work in their community. There is also a Provision of Sustenance category for individuals or groups. Person nominated for this award would have provided sustenance to the less fortunate either through the provision of food baskets and/or soup kitchens. The Acts of Heroism category relates to individuals who performed selfless acts of heroism which could have endangered their own safety while rescuing others in distress or relocating them to safer areas. The Service to the Public category is for individuals or groups would performed above and beyond the call of duty while providing service to the public in areas such as Medicine (doctors and /or nurses), Security (Police and Prison officers, security guards), Civil duties (including initiatives by Public Sector employees) and Media (Electronic and print). |
