Dr. Francis AlexisA former Grenada Attorney-General is not in support of moves by the ruling New National Party (NNP) government of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell to consider controversial Jamaican lawyer Hugh Wildman as the island's next Attorney-General.

Dr. Francis Alexis held the top legal post in the 1990-95 National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration of Sir Nicholas Brathwaite.

In a statement issued in St. George's on Tuesday, Dr. Alexis said that in considering Wildman for the AG post, Prime Minister Mitchell has shown himself to be extremely insensitive. He pointed to a string of infelicities dogging Wildman who currently holds the post of Special Prosecutor and Adviser to the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF).

According to Dr. Alexis, the Jamaican Court of Appeal is on record in the West Indian Reports as castigating Wildman for distasteful conduct and that the lawyer has proved repeatedly that he is incapable of working harmoniously either with Lawyers or Judges
He also chided Wildman for filing "frivolous and vexatious litigation" against a High Court Judge obviously for the purpose of scandal and abuse.

This is obvious reference to a move made by Wildman a few years ago to request then high court judge, Brian Alleyne, now serving on the OECS Court of Appeal from hearing his legal matters. Justice Alleyne had taken issue with the manner in which Wildman was conducting some of his cases.

Dr. Alexis also suggested that Wildman should not be considered for the post since the regional Judicial and Legal Services Commission had refused to have Wildman appointed to the Legal Service. "With all such difficulties with Wildman, one must condemn (Prime Minister) Mitchell as being extremely insensitive in thinking of Wildman as Attorney-General", he said.

Wildman is tipped to replace another attorney, Raymond Anthony who is said to be enjoying extremely poor relationship with the Mitchell government. Informed sources told this newspaper that Anthony is hardly consulted on important cases and legal issues by the NNP regime.

Prime Minister Mitchell lured Anthony into the NNP camp in the lead up to the 1999 general election as part of a move aimed at wooing supporters of the Grenada United Labour Party (GULP).
Anthony is a former executive member of the labour party.
