Head of the Roman Catholic Church in Grenada, Bishop Vincent Darius has spoken out against the lyrical contents of some of the local Christmas songs that are played on the airwaves around this time of the year. While some of the songs address several social issues facing the country, most of them attack the personal character of private citizens and have nothing to do with Christmas. Bishop Darius pointed out that when one listens to the local Christmas songs, no mention is made of "Christ" who is the reason for the season. "Many of our local Christmas songs, you do not hear the word Christ being called. Instead it is drinking, eating, feting", said His Lordship. Bishop Darius was preaching the Homily at the Nativity of the Lord or Midnight Mass held last weekend at Norton's Hall on Church Street. He noted that Grenada prides itself on being called a Christian society and a Christian country but that there are some people who are afraid to mention the word Christ. "When people in a Christian country are afraid to proclaim Christ we wonder what next will happen", he told the congregation. His Lordship stated that if the reason for Christmas is Christ, then Christ must have a prominent place in our culture. "If the reason for Christmas is Christ and Christ does not have a prominent place in our local Christmas songs, in our celebrations or whatever way we choose to celebrate Christmas then I tell you there is something we need to be fearful of", the Bishop said. Bishop Darius also expressed concern about the political situation in the country at this time. He pointed out that politicians are destroying each other for the sake of power with little emphasis being placed on the good of the country. His Lordship noted that the quality of life depletes day by day for many people and some are afraid of what is to come in the future. "And while politicians are fighting for power, hundreds are in misery. Couple with that you have the increase in violence and crime". His Lordship also used the occasion to appeal to Grenadians to save the country since it is the responsibility of each citizen to do so. "Saving our nation is the responsibility of all of us. We cannot and must not leave the salvation of the nation to politicians", he added.
