Great quality De La Grenade Products now available online at www.grenadamarket.com

Young Generations and Spice Island Classic basketball teams have received 12 basketballs from Tropical Shipping.

The donation was made Monday by Tropical Shipping Island Manager Cheney Joseph to the members of the basketball teams at the newly refurbished Carenage Sporting Facility.

Joseph told reporters that the management of the teams wrote to the company asking for assistance to conduct a holiday development introductory programme.

He said the company decided to assist because it saw the project as a good avenue for youth development in Grenada.

He announced that the company will donate other basketball equipment to the teams for its sporting activities.

President of Spice Island Classic basketball team Jenel Jacob received the basketballs on behalf of the team.

In thanking Tropical Shipping for their donation Jacob revealed that the basketballs will be put into good use.

She pointed out that her team, an all women team was formed four years ago but was not able to compete in much tournaments because there are no all-girls basketball teams in Grenada.

Despite this predicament, Jacob said that the members are constantly in training.

Head Coach of the two basketball teams Nigel “German” Mc Kie told reporters that the girls team has been training at the Presentation Boys College basketball court, because the Carenage court where they usually practiced was damaged in Hurricane Ivan.

Mc Kie indicated that in the post-Ivan period, he approached the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for assistance in refurbishing the basketball court.

He is confident that in two weeks time, both teams will be able to practice on the Carenage Court.

According to Coach Mc Kie, the project had some delays due to the shortage of cement in the country.

The Carenge Court was the venue for many basketball competitions on the island before it was badly damaged by the hurricane.

It is the home of Young Generations, the team that has won numerous basketball competitions both locally and regionally.
