It was a Christmas weekend holiday of violence in Grenada with two men being killed and one woman being chopped and left hanging onto life rather slimly. Dead are John Joseph of Tivoli, St Andrew’s and Quincy Mc Bernie of Vendome in St George’s who met their deaths in separate incidents. Eighteen year old Tessday Mc Sween of Birchgrove, St Andrew’s made his first court appearance on Wednesday before the Grenville Magistrate’s Court to answer the charge of Murder in the death of Mc Bernie. Police are still to make a breakthrough in the slaying of Joseph at the Tivoli Gas Station at the hands of armed robbers just before Christmas day. Mc Bernie lost his life the early hours of Christmas morning following a stabbing incident outside a nightclub in the St. Andrew’s area. The grieving family should have been celebrating both the Christmas season and birthday of the youngster which was on Christmas Day itself. The brother of the deceased, Shaffie Mc Bernie spoke to GRENADA TODAY on Thursday and found it extremely difficult to control the tears in his eyes and blamed himself for the death. He felt that he could have done something to prevent the slaying. According to Shaffie, the incident began when Qunicy and the murder suspect had an argument and he went and calm them down. He said that he then left his brother and went a short distance away with his friends when his brother came to him and told him that he wanted to go home. The brother said that the deceased did leave the area to get a bus but was unsuccessful and returned to the area. He stated that after Quincy came back, he noticed that the two were again involved in an argument but this time he did not intervene because his brother’s friends were close to him and he thought that they will put an end to the conflict. Shortly afterwards, Quincy was stabbed several times to the back and chest, one of the stabs penetrated his heart. The birthday cake that Quincy’s mother bought him to mark his birthday remains neatly in the box at the family’s home as a reminder of what happened on his birthday. Quincy was described by his brother as quiet and a very non-violent person. Mc Sween has been remanded at the Richmond Hill Prison until his next court appearance on January 16. In the case of 36-year old Joseph, he received a gun shot wound to the chest last week Tuesday night as robbers attempted to get some quick cash from the gas station. Police have questioned two people in connection with the shooting but no charges were laid against them. Manager of the gas station, Lerry Thomas told this newspaper that at the time of the incident both himself and two other employees were inside the office preparing to close shop for the night while Joseph who was employed as an attendant was on the outside. Thomas said that while inside he noticed his colleague struggling with a masked man who was trying to enter the building. He said that he saw a gun in the assailant’s hand, realised what was happening and decided to take cover. “I then heard a gun shot and by the time I rushed out he (Joseph) was already on the ground”, he remarked. Joseph was employed at the station for more than seven years. Thomas described the deceased as a very jovial person whom everybody liked. He made it clear that Joseph will be missed. “You can call on him at any time to come to work and he will do it”, he said of the deceased. Thomas said that the company will meet the funeral expenses of their former employee.
