The Grenada Boys Secondary school has donated US$1100.00 to students in the United States who were affected by hurricane Katrina in New Orleans earlier in the year.

Head Boy of the school, Shannon Marrast presented the cheque to U.S Ambassador to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Mary Karmer last Friday at the school’s newly refurbished auditorium.

In speaking at the ceremony, Principal of the all boys school Victor Asby said it was decided weeks ago by the school that the boys needed to make a contribution to the people of New Orleans.

“We saw the need to send the money to the Unites States notwithstanding that the United States has more than us”, he added.
According to Ashby, teachers as well as parents and students of the school made contributions to the fund.

The school Principal indicated that the money will not go to the American Red Cross, or the United States Embassy but directly to a school in New Orleans.

The St. Louis Cathedral Academy was named as the recipient of the money from GBSS. Asby announced that Principal of the Academy, Sister Mary Rose has already sent an email message thanking GBSS for the donation.

In the email, she said that the staff and students of the Academy will keep the children of Grenada in their prayers. Ashby noted that this deed by the boys of GBSS signifies just how far a simple gesture can go.

In response, Ambassador Karmer pointed out that this gesture by the staff and students of GBSS “has touched our hearts.” She noted that in spite of all the students of Grenada had to overcome as a result of the widespread devastation of the island in September 2004 by Hurricane Ivan, they have succeeded in raising their examination scores.

In showing her appreciation, the Ambassador presented the school with a poster of late Civil Rights Leader, Martin Luther King that read: Let Freedom Reign”, as well as a book on New Orleans that has information on the St. Louis Cathedral Academy.

The U.S envoy also presented a book, “Building Diplomacy” to the school.
