Successful applicants in the Courts Grenada Ltd Xmas Food Hamper distribution project for 2005 will receive their hampers valued approximately $150.00 this weekend.

The project, launched on Monday at the company’s office on Young Street, St George, is targeting 250 less fortunate families throughout the island.

This means an increase of 50 persons to benefit from the project since it was last held in 2003. The project was suspended by Courts last year as a result of the passage of Hurricane Ivan.

This year the project is being held in collaboration with eight local companies - Geo F Huggins & Company Ltd, Bryden and Minors Ltd, Marketing and National Importing Board, Gittens Group of Companies, Caribbean Agro, Grenada Rice Mills, E&T Industries and R.E. Walker.

The project falls under the EC $1/2 million budget allocated by Courts for community development projects in Grenada. Four out of the eight corporate partners attended the launch - Huggins, Bryden & Minors, MNIB and Gittens.

Manager of Corporate Marketing for Huggins, Denise Parke took the opportunity to encourage citizens to fill out the available vouchers that are printed in local newspapers. She is urging people not to shy away from this initiative since poverty exists throughout the island.

Sales Representative for Gittens, Stanley Johnson said that the participation of his company in the project is the firm’s way of giving back something to the country.

Managing Director of Courts’, Steve Brickell said that as the company’s corporate philosophy dictates, wherever it operates, it must contribute to the economic, social and human development of the country.

Brickell said the for the last five years Courts has been working in collaboration with other companies to bring Christmas cheer to some of the less fortunate within the communities.

He further stated that the continuation of the project is a signal of their dedication to the social welfare of citizens. The project is said to be a very worthwhile and Courts is hoping that in the coming years more private sector companies will get involved.

The closing date for applications from the General Public was Wednesday.
