The Ministry of Tourism has launched a major campaign aimed at beautifying all parishes throughout the island.

The “Anti Litter Glitter Campaign” which is being co-sponsored by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China was launched on Tuesday at one of the weekly ministerial press conferences.

The first four of a number of billboards will soon be erected throughout Grenada - two of these will be placed in St George, one in St Andrew and another in Gouyave.

The erection of these billboards estimated to cost $9,000 is being financed by the Chinese Embassy. Youths, adolescents and adults are being targeted in this campaign.

It is hoped that by targeting these groups of individuals they will be better able to educate the younger ones on the importance of keeping their surroundings clean. The campaign will also be brought into schools islandwide.

All parishes throughout Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique will be encouraged to form anti-litter groups to work closely with the National Beautification Committee within the Ministry of Tourism.

In addition, business owners within the towns are being encouraged to participate in a Christmas lighting competition. All parishes are also encouraged to be a part of a beautification competition at the end of which trophies will be awarded to winners in the different categories.

According to Minister of Tourism, Senator Brenda Hood, she hopes that the campaign and competition will continue on an annual basis as government seeks to re-beautify the island following the passage of Hurricane Ivan last year.

Resident Chinese Ambassador to Grenada, Qian Hungshan attended the event and said they are proud to be part of this worthwhile initiative.

The ambassador was accompanied by his Second Secretary, Pi Qing. Also attending the ceremony was Carcly Harrison, Chairperson of the National Beautification Committee and the Anti-Litter Glitter Programme.
