A group of St. Lucian workers are accusing those in charge of the major construction work taking place on Calivigny Island of trying to force them to work like slaves. Reports reaching our this newspaper indicate that more than a dozen St. Lucian workers employed with Paradis Ltd on the Calivigny Island project downed their tools Tuesday in solidarity with two colleagues who they believe were dismissed unfairly. The dispute reportedly started when two St. Lucian contract workers employed at the project owned by Italian Millionaire George Cohen as Dry Wall specialists on a one year contract were sent packing when they turned out to work. The workers allegedly complained that they were given two days to complete a task that was impossible to do in such a short period of time. The job was not completed and on the following morning when the two workers showed up on the job to complete the assignment, they were fired. GRENADA TODAY understand that all the other St. Lucian workers on the project site decided to down tools as a mark of solidarity with their countrymen over what they saw as unfair treatment. It was reported that nationals from Barbados, Trinidad and local Grenadians voiced their support for the treatment meted out to the two St. Lucian workers. There are also unconfirmed reports that all female Grenadian workers on the Calivigny Island project were also fired on the same day for being on the Island View jetty on Mainland Grenada where the protesting workers had assembled. One employee, Andrew Puboulay said that the Management at Paradis is demanding the impossible from the work brigade. The other workers who took protest action say that they had no choice but to stand in solidarity with their colleagues.€ Calivigny Island is a ten minute ride from the Island View jetty. The owners of the multi–million dollar project are boasting that at the end of the project, they intend to provide quality services to privileged visitors in search of tranquility, relaxation and comfort in their luxurious hotel, marina, villas and spa facilities.
