GRENADA TODAY has no apology to make to anyone with its firm stance against the ruling New National Party (NNP) of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell.

We have said it time and time again that history will record the NNP not of the Herbert Augustus Blaize era but of Keith Claudius Mitchell as the most corrupt, spiteful and vindictive administration to have ever ruled this island since Independence in 1974.

There is no need for us to rehash the Briefcase issue, the US$100 million promissory notes; the family deals with Call Centre and the Grenada Postal Corporation, the Dipcon and Mt-Hartman issues.

These are issues that will raise their heads once again at the appropriate time and "all in the fullness of time" when a strong and proper government would ensure that some in our midst would be prosecuted for misbehaviour in public office.

We can smell the NNP hands of interference in the case now in the hands of the Royal Grenada Police involving the PM's Security man known as Frederick "Balla" Noel who is September shot a man over a lover's quarrel in the Bocas area of St. Paul's.

It is our understanding that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) was approached by the police force for advice on how to proceed with the matter in light of the conflicting reports of both men.

Police insiders who are familiar with the case indicate that the DPP passed back the files to the police with strong suggestions that the two individuals should be charged for committing an offense.

It is now three months and nothing further has been heard of the matter from those with the powers to prosecute. Is there political interference in the case involving the P.M's security who has vowed that he loves Keith Claudius Mitchell so much that he is prepared to take a bullet for him?

Mr. Police Commissioner, the eyes of the nation are watching you. The nation has not forgotten the Balla shooting incident. These are the things that happen in our society and contribute to the breakdown of law and order and pose a serious threat to the democratic process.

We continue to do things that contribute to the undermining of our democratic system and institutions and then turn around when all hell breaks loose in the country and blame it on others. How can we continue to blame the ordinary John Public when they see these things happening and feel that society is heavily stacked against them?

The clear signal that we are sending out is that there are two sets of laws operating in the country - one for those with money, power and connections and the other which is to keep the small man in check.

If we put it another way, we are saying to the small man that if you come to me (the politician) and do my bidding then you will so get protection. Other than that, nothing doing for you.

This newspaper would also like to make mention of the Janice Celestine matter which is another classic case of when the "Chief" in the NNP is against you then nothing is doing for you.

The decision to call back Celestine's application for a scholarship offered by the Government of India smells of hatred, spite and getting back at the former Consul-General in New York for the activities of her close male companion leading up to the November 2003 general elections.

This newspaper has more than solid and credible information that Miss Celestine's friend was called in by Keith Mitchell in the build up to the elections and given a serious warning by the NNP leader.

He was told in no uncertain manner that if he continues to offer computer-related assistance to "the boys" in the NDC then he was doing harm to the Consul-General and her stint at the Grenada Mission in New York. The message was clear from Dr. Mitchell: Stop it or Janice Celestine will be removed.

What this so-called Prime Minister failed to understand is that if the NNP had made a similar approach to the individual for help along the same lines as the NDC that he would have done the same thing for them. The individual is known to be a nationalist at heart and not one who is depending on any political party for survival.

But the problem with Mitchell and the NNP is that they cannot differentiate this based on their philosophy which is there for all to see. It is a straight case with the NNP: You are either for me or against me. No one will be allowed to adopt an independent position with this lot now in government.

That is why, we have always indicated that the government led by Keith Claudius Mitchell missed the boat a long time ago to heal this nation of ours after 31 years of bloody and painful politics and to engage in politics of inclusion and genuine nation building.

In time, the country will get another opportunity.
