Policemen are up in arms over the decision of the authority to allow a container of relief supplies that came into the country after the recent hurricanes to be left to rot on their compound on the Carenage in St. George’s.

GRENADA TODAY was called in early Tuesday morning to take photographs of the spoiled stuff being taken out of the container to be thrown away.

Our reporter who visited the area reported seeing a blue container in the back of the Fire Station yard in which the spoilt goods were located. He said the container was open and at the entrance he noticed a number of fine bags with some things inside them.

He reported seeing a water truck at the back of the container getting ready to wash it down. “The fine bags appeared to have what looked like beans and rice”, he said.

A policeman was also seen sitting in front of the items. In addition, on the ground in front of the container were some beans and some young chicks could be seen feasting on them.

According to the reporter, there was a bad odour in the air and it smelled like rotten tin foods. Attempts by this newspaper to reach the official spokesman for the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) for comment on the issue proved futile. He was said to be out of the country.

However, a police insider told this newspaper that approaches were made to the Police high Command to distribute the goods inside the container to lawmen in need but this feel on deaf ears.

Several foreign governments and aid agencies came to the rescue of Grenada after Hurricane Ivan battered the island in September 2004, leaving many homes without food and water, and interrupting most utility services.
