The Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF) has received high praise from Minister of National Security, Senator Einstein Louison last Wednesday during a sitting of Senate at the Grenada Trade Center at Grand Anse, St. George's.

"I want to commend the GGPF for keeping the peace and ensuring that it was a practical and incident free carnival", Sen. Louison told the sitting. His commendation comes less than one week after Acting Commissioner of Police Winston James told reporters at a news conference that Spice Mas' 2005 was peaceful with no serious reports of incidents.

The Security Minister told the Senate that this year's carnival was used as a test run in preparation for the 2007 Cricket World Cup at which Grenada will host games six matches in the Super 8 round. He was confident that the efforts made by the police force during the carnival celebrations "will be in tune with the requirements for the World Cup." Minister Louison also commended the lawmen for what he called their "tremendous improvement" in handling hurricane Emily as compared to hurricane Ivan.

The police force came under serious criticisms for their lack of performance especially their inability to deal with the break down of law and order and heavy looting of business houses during the passage of Ivan last September.

Military personnel from Trinidad and Tobago, the sub-regional Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), Jamaica and Guyana were quickly despatched to Grenada to help maintain law and order in the Spice Isle.

When Emily stuck last month, the RGPF under the command of newly appointed Acting Commissioner of Police, Winston James, a curfew was imposed and police officers were seen in numbers engaged in patrols around the island, ensuring that persons stayed away from getting involved in unlawful acts.
