Grenada is poised to have a new Director of Tourism. Informed sources told GRENADA TODAY that the the Grenada Board of Tourism (GBT) has decided not to grant another contract to the current holder of the post, William Joseph.

According to a well-placed source, Joseph had requested a one-year extension of his contract which is due to expire in October but it did not meet with favour from the government-appointed board.

The board of Directors of GBT is headed by Jocelyn Sylvester-Gairy, a known supporter of the current government of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell. Speculation is rife that a Grenadian with ties to the hemispheric Organisation of American States (OAS) is tipped to become the island's new Director of Tourism. Joseph, a long-standing member of the civil service, has been serving in the post for the past two terms.

The source said that the Public Service Commission (PSC) would have to find a suitable place within the civil service to accommodate him since he was seconded to GBT from government service.

Joseph had served as a Permanent Secretary in several government ministries before he was seconded to the tourist board. When the Mitchell-led New National Party (NNP) took over the reigns of government in June 1995, Joseph was one of those senior public officers immediately sent on forced leave from the service.

The Mitchell government had deemed him as "sympathetic" to the outgoing National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration of Sir Nicholas Brathwaite. Joseph is known to be interested in pursuing legal studies to become an attorney-at-law whenever he retires from the civil service.
