Chief Magistrate Patricia Mark has remanded two Dominican women to Her Majesty's Prisons (HMP) at Richmond Hill following their appearance Wednesday at the St. George's No.1 Magistrate Court in connection with a drug related incident in the Spice Isle. The two, Tasha Martin, aged 19 who is unemployed and Shana Nadia Challenger, described as a 23 year old Hairdresser were charged jointly with Doing an Act Preparatory to Drug Trafficking. The Dominicans were nabbed Sunday at the Point Salines International Airport (PSIA) following their arrival in Grenada aboard a LIAT flight. A police source told GRENADA TODAY that the women were taken into custody after a large quantity of cash were found strapped to their bodies. He said that the cash totalled US$60,000.00 as well as Euros 60,000.00. He indicated that when questioned, the young women could not explain the purpose of their visit to Grenada and was very evasive with answers about the cash in their possession, resulting in the the police deciding to arrest and charge them in connection with the illegal drug trade. The lawmen believe that the Dominican nationals came to Grenada to engage in drug related activities. The two were remanded to Prisons until August 23 when they are expected to make their next court appearance. If found guilty the non-nationals can be fined up to $10,000.00 or sent to prisons or both as well as being deported from the country. The Eastern Caribbean is said to be a major transhipment point for drugs going into North America and Europe from mainly Colombia and Venezuela. |
