Deputy political leader of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Prime wants an investigation to be conducted into the $1.5 million sporting complex being constructed on the sister isle of Carriacou.

According to Prime, a number of persons on the sister isle of Carriacou and Petite Martinique have been complaining bitterly about the slow pace of work and the apparent inefficiency and wastage on the project since its inauguration in 1999. He called on the Minister of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, Elvin Nimrod who is also the Member of Parliament for the constituency to launch an investigation into the construction of this facility.

"It is quite apparent that large sums of money are being spent on this project and you are not seeing any results. Indeed, this project has been punctuated by 'stops and starts'", he said. "The 2005 Budget was projected to spend another $1.5m on the said project this year again without any end in sight. Someone needs to tell us what is the true state of affairs with this project", he added.

Prime claimed that large sums of money were spent on the project long before the actual construction contract was signed. He questioned whether the Government really have the money for the project.

He said: "At present, there seems to be very little going on. Is it because the Project Manager has caused all work on this project to cease or has the funding dried up?
"It is widely known that the ROC on Taiwan was the main source of funding for this project. Under the system of parliamentary democracy "the people have a right to know every public act, everything done in a public way by their public functionaries", he added.

Earlier in the year, Grenada's ruling New National Party (NNP) government of Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell broke off diplomatic relations with Taiwan in favour of Mainland China.

Prime noted that the sum of $2,211,670.99 in the form of a contract was awarded for the construction of this facility but the record shows that substantial sums were paid out to the contractor prior to signing of the contract and after the contract was signed.

"The bleeding continues yet the project is far from complete. The people of Carriacou and Petite Martinique are calling on the Minister for an independent full-scale investigation into this ill-fated project", he said.
