Despite the controversy over whether Grenada should hold carnival this year, the season is in full swing as the Children's Carnival Frolic (CCF) was staged last weekend.

On Saturday, the Tanteen Tennis Court was filled with hundreds of excited children, whether they were participating in the festive event, or they were just curious onlookers.

Colour and creativity were clearly on display as four bands competed for the title of band of the year. The children who paraded in the bands seemed unaware of the competition, with their only aim to have fun in their carnival costumes.

Ann and Associates won the band of the year with 488 points, followed by Legacy Mas in second spot with 438 points, while Commancheros & Associates came third with 356 points. Lawrence Tobias of Ann and Associates was crowned King of the Band with his costume, "Mass in you mass," and Jahnika La Borde of Legacy Mass was proclaimed Queen of the band with her costume, "Queen of Maypole."

The climax of the children's frolic was the Junior Calypso Monarch competition, which showed that the future of the art-form is in very good hands. Artistes as young as five years old were singing songs of current affairs such as "Natural Disaster," "Ivan," "Obey your Parents" and "Start Planting."

The young Calypsoians also had the crowd jumping to songs fitting for the Soca Monarch competition as they wooed even the adults at the event. In the end, Etieron Edwards (Prince Tireon) with his rendition "Start Planting" was crowned the Junior Calypso Monarch with 256 points.

Dahila Alexander (Little Dahlia) placed second with her rendition "Too Much Jump and Wave" with 251 points, and Rashard Isaac (Rashard) came third with his song "Coming Back Strong" with 246 points.

The Junior Panorama Competition was also held with the winner being Coco Cola Pan Wizards, followed by NCB Angel Harps, followed by Florida All Stars.
