Two young Grenadian students have been recognised by the Grenada Union of Teachers (GUT) Co-operative Credit Union for their winning entries in its National Poetry and Essay Competition.

The top students were able to recite their winning entries at a short ceremony held last Friday at the GUT office on the corner of St. John's and Grenville Streets in front of their parents, teachers, and union members.

Janeil Grant of St. Matthew Roman Catholic School is the winner of the poetry segment of the competition and Michael Edwards of Beacon High School captured the essay component of the competition. Participants had to write on the topic, "Credit Union - it is where you belong." Students between the ages of 9-11 were eligible to enter the poetry part of the competition while students between the ages of 12-15 were able to part take in the essay subdivision of the competition.

Marketing Officer of GUT, Camille Roberts said the aim of the competition was to help children understand Credit Unions in order to help prepare them for their financial future. Roberts admitted that although the union sent invitations to all schools through out the Tri-island State to participate in the competition, only three schools entered with a mere nine students submitting entries.

The three schools are St. Matthew Roman Catholic School, Beacon High School, and Telescope Primary School. Roberts disclosed that along with certificates of participation, each student had a savings account opened for them at the credit union so that they could start saving for their future.

Margaret St. Louis who was the judge of the competition stated that the schools that did not participate in the competition missed a golden opportunity. She indicated that the students who did partake in the contest did a commendable job. Winners of the competition represented Grenada at the St. Lucia Co-operative Youth Conference last month where they learnt about the importance of credit unions and shared their poems with others.
