Grenada may not be having any West Indies matches this home series but Digicel made sure they could experience West Indies Bigger Better Cricket. West Indies players Courtney Browne, Darren Sammy and Devon Smith along with Team Manager Tony Howard spent the day Monday with the people of the Spice Isle. The children in particular enjoyed the day and even got some coaching tips from West Indies cricket team manager Tony Howard of Barbados. In a release issued, Digicel's Sponsorship, Events and New Media Manager, Marita Laurent said the company was pleased to have been able to do something for Grenada during the Cricket Series. The group visited the Tanteen Cricket Ground offering hands-on cricket tips and pointers to 120 young Grenadian Cricketers from four primary schools and their coaches. The Windies players also took a tour of St George's and its surroundings to view the recovery process in the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan that ravaged the country late last year. They also met with some of the people of Grenada who have been working hard to restore much of the island's infrastructure which was severely damaged. The tour included the National Stadium and the International Cricket Ground. According to Laurent, it was heartbreaking to see the damage done to the National Stadium at Queen's Park which has been home to so much amazing cricket. She was confident that "the spirit of the Grenadian people will ensure great cricket will be there once again". The players also made an appearance at Digicel's retail outlet on the Carenage to sign autographs and to talk to the people who came out to enjoy some time with them. Digicel's response to Hurricane Ivan recovery efforts in Grenada last year approached over EC $3.5 million, including the granting of EC$50 in free call credit to each of its customers to help them reach out during this difficult time. Employees of the company also distributed food, water, and clothes to the community after the storm, while engineers and equipment were dispatched to sustain power and service to customers. |
