The Grenada Trades' Union Council is appalled by the decision of the government to impose a five percent deductible contribution from the salary of all workers regardless of his/her income.

The TUC considers this deductible contribution as being unfairly applied and above all will undoubtedly be a colossal burden particularly on the worker in the lower income bracket.

There was absolutely no consultation with the labour movement on this new view levy, considering the significant implications this new deductible contribution will have on the social and economic life of workers.

The TUC therefore calls on Government to hold dialogue with the workers' movement and NGOs to arriving at a more amicable solution and to encourage workers participation in the reconstruction of our nation. While the TUC believes that it is the responsibility of all citizens to make special sacrifice in this period of reconstruction it has to be done sensibly and humanely.

In addition, the TUC wishes to make it known that any workers' contribution for Grenada's reconstruction should go to a special fund that is transparent, has clear procedures for accountability and for which a clearly defined plan for the use of the funds must be developed.
