Manuel Samper taking receipt of the plaque from the Cuban Ambassador Humberto Rivero in Grenada The militant Technical and Allied Workers Union (TAWU) on Friday paid tribute to two organisations from neighbouring Caribbean countries for their recognition in assisting Grenada in its reconstruction efforts following the passage of hurricane Ivan last September.

Parliamentary Representative for the Town of St. George, Peter David handed out plaques to Union Electrical de Cuba and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) at a brief ceremony held at TAWU's headquarters on Green Street in St. George's.

The Cubans played a crucial role in the restoration of power and the rebuilding of several transformers during their assignment with the Grenada Electricity Services Ltd (GRENLEC) that had resulted in customers having their supplies restored in a shorter space of time.

Parliamentary Representative for the Town of St. George Peter David presenting the plaque to Colonel Bruce Lovell of the Guyana Defence Force Pablo The Guyanese on the other hand have been engaged in re-roofing a number of public buildings including Police Stations, Schools as well as Her Majesty's Prisons (HMP). President of TAWU, Senator Chester Humphrey spoke about the significance of the brief ceremony, noting that his union is the bargaining agent for construction and electricity workers in Grenada.

He said that the idea was conceived as a sign of TAWU's profound appreciation and gratitude for the work done by the Cubans and Guyanese. In taking receipt of the Plaque, team leader for Union Electrical de Cuba, Pablo Manuel Samper said that they were happy to be of assistance to a neighbour in need. In his remarks, Colonel Bruce Lovell thanked the Grenadian people for their support and assistance to GDF members during their 6 month stay in Grenada.

The Guyanese tour of duty are scheduled to end on April 30 while the Cubans departed Grenada on Wednesday.
