The T.A Marryshow Community College (TAMCC) was the recipient of $11,000.00 on Monday from the British High Commission and the Grenada Hotel and Tourism Association (GHTA). The handing over ceremony took place at the Tourism and Hospitality Arts Department of the college which is located at Tanteen in St. George's. Acting Principal of TAMCC, Lincoln Morgan who accepted the funds said that the money will be used to help needy students in the department. Morgan pointed out that despite the low fees charged for courses at the college, there are some students who experience tremendous hardship from time to time and are not able to adequately finance their education at the institution. He said that due to this problem, the college was forced to set up a fund to assist some students with their financial needs. He expressed thanks to GHTA and the High Commission for assisting the college in its efforts to provide quality education to all those who need it. GHTA President, Ian Da Breo who also spoke said that the association is pleased to be involved in assisting the needy students in the hospitality division of the school. He pointed out that a few years ago the High Commission saw the need for better trained hospitality workers in the tourism sector in Grenada and wanted to address it. Da Breo said that both GHTA and the High Commission were conscious of the financial constraints of students and that the administration staff at TAMCC recognized that if the students received assistance with tuition, books, and uniforms they would be in a better position for learning. He thanked the High Commission for its "very timely" assistance to the students since parents of many of them might have been left at a disadvantage after the passage of hurricane Ivan in September. "I'm convinced (that) by helping these students the British High Commission is helping the hospitality sector of this country," he remarked. The GHTA President said that his organisation is "very happy to be (a) partner with the Commission is this respect." Da Breo encouraged the students to value what they have received, as well as work hard, and to be conscious of their career of choice. Resident British High Commissioner Victor Wallis said the British government is delighted to be able to help students at the college especially in the post-hurricane era. The Tourism and
Hospitality Department at TAMCC offers courses in Food and Beverage,
Front Office Procedures and Tourism Management. |
