Singing religious hymns and offering up supplication to God, over three hundreds persons gathered outside York House Tuesday in search of divine intervention for the convening of the House of Representatives on the island. "We shall Overcome", " Bind us Together", "The right hand Of God is pointing in our land" were just some of the hymns they sung with red and white candles ablaze in their hands. Standing and looking on inside and outside of the gates of the Parliament building were, officers of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF). The vigil which was organised by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), was aimed at forcing the ruling New National Party (NNP) administration of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell, to hold monthly meeting of the House of Representatives. The last Parliamentary session was held on March 30 and no date has yet been fixed for the next sitting. NDC officials have said that if they are not allowed to discuss the "people's business" in the place where they were duly elected to do so, then they will take the "people's issue" to the streets. General Secretary Peter David told the gathering that congress will continue the struggle until government convenes Parliament because if the opposition cannot have a voice in the house then it will do so outside of the building. According to David, the Member of Parliament for the Town of St. George, the people of Grenada spoke on November 27 when they elected seven opposition members to the House and so the "voice of people is the voice of God." "That institution belongs to us, it does not belong to Keith Mitchell and as long as he closes the door we will protest until he opens the door so that the people can have their voices in the House of Parliament", he added. David thanked the crowd for showing up outside York House saying it is a clear indication Grenadians are vigilant about the need to protect their democratic institutions. "Therefore brothers and sisters we are going to continue struggling", he remarked. David said that the NDC has several peaceful upcoming events planned which he hopes will receive the usual support in its struggle to get Parliament to convene."The voice of the people must be heard", the MP told the gathering, while stressing the need to continue the struggle for democracy. "We have to stay together, do not let Keith Mitchell divide us. He is going to come again with all sorts of lies, all kinds of slander, it didn't work then, it will not work now", David said. The NDC Executive member encouraged supporters to continue with their peaceful protest until the next session of the "Peoples' Parliament" to be held on Sunday in front of the Melville Street Fish Market. |
