St. George's University has issued a challenge tocommercial entities in Grenada to increase their employees' access to tertiary education. Speaking to a group of General and Human ResourceManagers, the University's Caribbean Admissions and Recruitment Administrator, Colin Dowe announced SGU's intention to match the monetary value of scholarships given to employees by employers. The initiative
will apply exclusively to full-time and part-time undergraduate programmes
undertaken at St. George's University. This programme extends to 4existing
awardees, as well as individuals who simply want to read for a course. At present, the University awards eight (8) Arts & Sciences, 4 (four) medical, 3 (three) pre-medical and 3 (three) masters of public health scholarships annually. An award is available to Grenadians under the Caricom Undergraduate Scholarship Programme (CUSP), which reduces theirtuition by two-thirds. Additionally, last year the University initiated the Grenadian Undergraduate Scholarship Programme (GUSP) which representsan additional 75% or 50% or 25% reduction in tuition off the Caricom rate. These scholarships are SGU's response to an ever increasing demand for more Grenadians to access higher levels of education. In the same spirit, in celebration of Grenada's 30th Anniversary of Independence, the University unveiled an annual Independence Scholarship Awards Programme that will benefit common entrance participants The top common
entrance performer along with the top performers from two randomly selected
primary schools The two schools randomly selected during this year's Independence celebrations were the St. George's Seventh Day Adventist School and the Vendomme R.C. School. Persons can now access undergraduate degrees in Management Information Systems and Liberal Studies along with Business Administration and Accounting, Life Sciences and the professional programmes of Medicine and Veterinary medicine. In this regard, SGU's response to the demand for tertiary education has not been strictly quantitative. The University continues to address itself to the qualitative issues that are necessary conditions to the continued development of the institution. |
