The 2004 Grenada Football Association (GFA) football season was opened last Saturday with a colorful march past of participating teams and a double header exhibition match at the National Sporting stadium at Queen's Park, St. George's.

This year's tournament has been divided into three categories: the Premier League, and first and second divisions. There will also be a knockout competition and a forty and over competition which was won last year by St. Andrew's.

The new season was declared opened by GFA's President, Dr. Elliot Mc. Guire who called on players to strive for excellence in the sport.

Dr. Mc. Guire urged the young footballers on the island to practice hard and play fairly at all times since this is good for the game. During Saturday's ceremony, the GFA boss commented on the "Spice Boyz" good performance in helping to place Grenada on the football map.

Team Grenada was able to win its first round encounter against Guyana but fell inb the next round to the mighty United States which is rated in the first fifteen in world football.

Dr. Mc Guire told the teams participating in this year's tournament that they needed to work hard in order to advance and to win the competition.

Following the official opening ceremony, two exhibition matches were played including a women's all-stars featuring Queen's Park Rangers/Fontenoy (St. George's combined) and St Patrick's and St. Andrew combined.

The game ended 3-1 in favour of St. George's combined. The other game held as part of the opening ceremony saw Grenada taking on St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), in an Under-20 friendly.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes of play. Both Grenada and SVG are preparing for the regional Under-20 competition to be held shortly.
