There is no apparent end to the war of words between the Media Workers Association of Grenada (MWAG) and the ruling New National Party (NNP) government of Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell. Tension between the two sides erupted once against last month following a directive from the Director of the Government Information Service (GIS), Selwyn Noel warning reporters of running the risk of feeling the "full weight of the law" if they reproduce an alleged libelous story of the Prime Minister. The local media protested against the perceived threat from Noel and accused the Mitchell government of trying to curtail press freedom. And over the weekend, the Minister with responsibility for Information, Senator Einstein Louison slammed the New Director of the Grenada Broadcasting Network (GBN), Odette Campbell who took part in a protest action staged by MWAG over the Noel letter. Campbell took the decision to resign from the network after the management suspended her for one week for allegedly showing solidarity with the protesting journalists. Sen. Louison accused Campbell of trying to demonstrate that she was bigger than the management of the network. Following is the full text of the MWAG response to the remarks from Sen. Louison at NNP's public meting on Sunday in Happy Hill, St. George's: The Media Workers Association of Grenada notes with grave concern the distasteful attack on the former News Director of the Grenada Broadcasting Network (GBN) by Minister of Information Senator Einstein Louison while addressing a political meeting in Happy Hill on Sunday, June 6. The Minister spent more than fifteen minutes lambasting the character and personality of the former News Director. Much of the information disseminated by the Minister was of a personal nature and therefore MWAG is of the view that Senator Louison was using the opportunity to put Mrs Campbell in bad light and the government and his political party in a good light. MWAG is also concerned that Senator Lousion who is known for propaganda and distortion seems bent on putting sections of the media in a negative perspective. MWAG calls on the Information Minister to respect the role of the media and their right to dissimilate information. We note that comments of this nature insight attack and abuse of media workers. Supporters might be of the view that they are getting their directives from their leaders. We
have had a history of that kind of behavior over the years and again we
strongly appeal to the Political leader of the NNP and its executive to
ensure that speakers on the political platform desist from that kind of
despicable behavior. |
