The Grenada Co-operative Nutmeg Association (GCNA) has commenced work on its $18 million office complex which is expected to be completed by November next year. Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell turned the sod during a brief ceremony held on the site of the project at Lagoon Road last Thursday. Speaking at the ceremony, Representative for Williamson Consultant Architects, Michelle Slinger disclosed that the building will house the entire GCNA operations, the Grenada Cocoa Association (GCA) as well as some other commercial office spaces. She said that the building, on completion will provide respite to customers since there will be parking spaces, as well as easy access to the different offices. According to Slinger, the intention is to have as many local contractors on the project as possible and to this end a number of contracts have been awarded to them for work during the different stages of construction. She promised that the building will be constructed in such a way that it will be in compliance with the urban landscape of St. George's. Chairman of the Board of the GCNA Ramsey Rush described the construction of an office complex for the organisation as "progressive thinking". He said that it will help earn additional funds for nutmeg farmers in Grenada when some of the spaces are rented. Agriculture Minister Gregory Bowen who gave brief remarks pointed out that the hope of the government is to see the project properly managed during the different stages of construction. Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell who made remarks before turning the sod stressed the need for co-operation noting that when stakeholders work together much can be achieved. Funding for the project was made available by First Caribbean Bank International while the Project Manager is Joseph John from Joseph John and Associates. Last Thursday's ceremony was attended by Opposition Leader Tillman Thomas, Parliamentary Representative for South St. George Glynis Roberts, present and past board members of the GCNA as well as nutmeg farmers. |
