Outspoken defense attorney, Anslem Clouden has warned Grenadians who received money from Van Brink and his collapsed First International Bank of Grenada (FIBG) that they can expect the FBI and other US law-enforcement agencies to knock on their doors.

Clouden, a former Opposition Senator, recently received a High Court judgement in his favour against Brink who was arrested late last month in Uganda.

The mastermind behind the setting up of First Bank has been indicted by a Federal Grand Jury in Portland, Oregon on charges of defrauding investors out of more than US$200 million.

Brink is also expected to face other charges such as mail fraud, wire fraud, engaging in monetary transactions with criminally derived property and money laundering conspiracy. In commenting on Brink's arrest, Clouden told reporters in St. George's that the fugitive from justice is known to have purchased luxurious mansions, vehicles and other things from the ill-gotten money.

According to Clouden, the offshore banker had often given monetary gifts to political parties, government officials and their associates.

He said with that being the case, no one should be surprised if U.S law enforcement agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) would go after these persons who took receipts of these gifts from Brink.

"I believe that Brink will begin to talk and expose a number of closely guarded secrets and persons who received large monetary gifts and so on from him", he remarked. "I am almost certain that the FBI will want to recover most, if not all of these monies and properties and in so doing they will make a plea bargain or some offer to (Brink) who in turn will spill his guts", he said.

The local attorney was confident that the persons who received monies from First Bank and or Brink himself will have to pay back the funds "face the music". "It is only time before the people of Grenada learn more about Van Brink and his associates than they knew. They will all know whenever Van Brink begins to talk", he remarked.

Clouden also made reference to an admittance in a local court by Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell that he had written to another indicted american offshore banker, David Rowe thanking him for contributions made to the ruling New National Party (NNP) in the 1999 general election campaign.

He noted that Rowe was the Managing Director of FIBG and Cambridge International Bank and Trust (CIBT), which was a subsidiary of First Bank. Clouden said that he will be seeking to find out how much money Dr. Mitchell's NNP received from Rowe as part of the bank's contribution to the ruling party.

"Those monies that Rowe gave to the NNP are the monies of poor Americans who placed all of their retirement savings into these banks with the expectation of receiving high interest yield and therefore the NNP must be prepared to repay these monies to the appropriate authorities which they received from Mr. Rowe", he added.
