Opposition leader Tillman ThomasOpposition Leader Tillman Thomas said he is prepared to go to jail and has warned that the law of Libel would not deter him from dealing with a number of perceived wrong doings in the country.

He made the comment during the Adjournment last Friday at a sitting of the House of Representatives at York House St. George's. Thomas, the political leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed concern with the current situation involving Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell and the local media.

Earlier in the proceedings House Speaker Lawrence Joseph requested a ten minute break where he met with both government and opposition members. It had to do with a ruling he made as a result of several questions submitted by Thomas which were not on the Order Paper for Friday's sitting.

The questions sought to clear the air about reports circulating in the country which alleges that Dr. Mitchell took a bribe from German fraudster Eric Resteiner in exchange for a diplomatic posting.

Prime Minister Mitchell has denied the allegation which was published in the Miami based Offshore Alert and has since begun legal action against several persons including the author of the publication David Marchant.

The situation between Prime Minister Mitchell and the local media had also taken a turn for the worse last week as a result of the determination by journalists to continue pursuing the story.

Media practitioners defy an order from Director of the Government Information Service (GIS) Selwyn Noel who threatened that "the full force of the law will be brought to bear" on any one reporting the story. Since then at least one journalist Leroy Noel was detained and questioned in connection with an article he wrote about the Grenadian leader.

Thomas pointed out that he would not be frightened with threats of Libel by the Prime Minister in an attempt to silence certain views in the country. Dr. Mitchell told the sitting Friday that legal action has begun against Offshore Alert and that there are several more suits on the way.

The Grenadian leader said he is unsure if those to come will involve Criminal Libel since it is a decision for the Police and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution. Thomas, the political leader of the NDC pointed out that attempts by Dr. Mitchell to use the Court system to frustrate certain individuals through the use of libel is irrelevant.

He said that he will continue to speak on the issue and that he is prepared to stand the consequences, once he knows what he is doing is right. Member of Parliament for the Town of St. George Peter David who also spoke during the Adjournment warned that Grenada is going down the wrong road.

He said that Dr. Mitchell must not go around threatening people with criminal Libel especially the media since it is causing the wrong reaction. David, the General Secretary of the NDC used the occasion to appeal to the Grenadian leader to show restraint, act responsibly and to do so within the laws of the country.
