Head of the Roman Catholic Church in Grenada, Bishop Vincent Darius has spoken of attempts to remove God from the educational system not only in Grenada but worldwide.

He made the comment while delivering the feature address at the Diocesan Pentecost Assembly held at the Seamoon Cultural Center in St. Andrew's last Sunday.

Bishop Darius was speaking on the theme "What is the Spirit saying to the Church now, Wake up Revive what little you have left it is Dying Fast".

He told hundreds of Catholics gathered that "we must say today at no cost and at no time will we put God out of the picture". The Catholic Church has declared 2004 as "The Year of Catholic Education" in schools on the island.

Bishop Darius noted that the church was able to get the Keith Mitchell-led New National Party (NNP) government to make amendment to the Education Act of 2003 which was criticised for attempting to take out denominational prayers from schools.

He said that with 2004 being declared as the year of Catholic Education, Christians must remind themselves of the responsibility to safeguard Catholic Education.

The Bishop stated that in the island's national anthem, "we sing "ever conscious of God" and "may God bless our nation" and so we must not allow God to be removed from our institutions".

According to the Clergyman, the teaching of the faith is replaced in schools today by something called comparative religion and he called on Catholics to be alert, and never sit back and allow this to happen.

Bishop Darius told the gathering that in order to provide a well rounded education system there must be greater collaboration involving all stakeholders.

Noting that there are serious problems in the schools, the Catholic leader indicated that the quality of education is something all Catholics in Grenada have to deal with and he urged them not to relinquish their responsibilities.

Bishop Darius reminded Catholics of the need to reclaim the church's missionary mandate which is to go out and proclaim the good news.

"We need to evangelise so that people can have a personal experience of Jesus Christ", he told the assembly.

In addition, he said that there is a need for Catholics to be open to new ideas since if parishes are weak then the diocese is weak.

"The Bishop alone cannot build the Church in the diocese, it takes a collaborative effort within parish, so what we do in our parish is extremely important for the well being of the diocese", he added.

During the celebration, several parishes also launched their Pastoral Plans, which would act as a blue print for what they intend to achieve during the next three years.
