Local promoters bringing foreign artistes into Grenada to perform during this year's carnival celebrations must pay a fee up front before they can stage their event.

That's the word coming out from Carnival Committee officials during a news conference held at the Ministerial Complex building in the Botanical Gardens Monday.

Chairperson of the GCC Jennifer Woodroofe said they had asked the promoters of Glow, Bras and Glow as well as Euphoria to pay an undisclosed sum of money for them to get the green light to stage their events.

Euphoria is planned for Wednesday August 4 at the National Stadium in Queen's Park while Glow and Brass and Glow are scheduled for August 7 at Quarantine Point and Foxx Inn respectively.

Some of the artistes expected to feature at those shows include Bunjii Garlin and Asylum Band, Destra Garcia and Atlantix as well as Machel Mantano from Trinidad along with Tall Pree, Inspector, Papa Jerry, Sheldon Douglas among others from Grenada.

According to Woodroofe, they had since informed the promoters that they intend to collect the monies up front in order to avoid a similar situation which occurred last year when part of the monies were paid.

The GCC Chairperson stated that they had received a response thus far from one of the organisors complaining about the cost. Woodroofe pointed out that this individual was told to put the concern in writing but that they are still awaiting the correspondence.

When asked what would happen if the fees requested from the promoters are not paid, Woodroofe said she hopes it does not have to reach to that stage. She said the body is hopeful some form of accommodation can be realised between the GCC and the organisors before the events are held since they had gotten the go ahead from government to collect the fees.

The GCC Chairperson pointed out that there will be no further contacts with the show promoters in order to avoid criticisms levelled at them like last year when they had assisted in promoting the foreign shows.

She insisted that it is Grenada's carnival and her intention is not to knock the foreign artistes since she would also want to see the locals appear in regional shows as well.

Woodroofe pointed out however that the local artistes are not treated fairly when they are referred to as "many more" during the promotion.

"Much as I love to see our artistes being part of the whole thing it bothers me coming down Granby Street when I see Bunjii Garlin's picture and Machel Mantano's picture on a banner" the GCC Chairperson noted.

She charged that the locals are being short changed and spoke of having problems when foreign artistes become the stars of Grenada's carnival.
