The 2004 criminal assizes set for February will start on Tuesday before High Court Judges Kenneth Benjamin and Charmaine Pemberton at the Numbers One and Two High Courts respectively in St. George's. A total of 64 cases are listed for hearing in the assizes during the next three to four months. There are six cases of murder, thirteen rape, thirteen grievous harm, four indecent assault, three indictments of incest, and one of sedition. Others cases to be heard range from house breaking to armed robbery, possession of firearms and ammunition, and threats of death. One of the high profile accused persons facing trial is suspected "Bank Robber" Glen "Ferrow" Samuel, who had fled the island was was caught late last year in Houston, Texas in the United States. Samuel was returned to Grenada for trial by the US Department of Homeland Security to face trial for his alleged involvement in the armed robbery of Scotia Bank in Grand Anse a few years ago.
Another notable case involves Hilary Ogilvie of the Bocas, St. Paul
who is accused of stabbing her mother to death. The jury will also be called upon to detemrine the fate of Marlon Bedeau of Beaulieu, St. George's who is charged with the gruesome murder of his Grand Mother, as well as Daniel Protain of Fontenoy in St. George's who is accused of the stabbing to death of fellow villager. And the convicted but feared Aldin "Aussie" Phillip, will stand trial for the gunning down in the south of the island of of Rawle "Southie" Gilkes, a suspected drug dealer of Mt. Airy, St. Paul's. Phillip was deported back to his homeland from Trinidad and Tobago after serving a number of prison sentences on a wide range of criminal offences. The court will also hear another murder case involving four South St. George's men, Sheldon "Dutch" Bain, Elvon Barry, Zoyd Clement, and Kenton Phillip who are charged with the October 7, 2002 shooting death of Belmont trafficker, Catherine Omelia Roberts. Former Soca and Road Monarch winner, Sheldon Douglas is also expected to make a court appearance during the upcoming assizes on a charge of grievous harm. Douglas is accused of hitting another man with a bottle in his face during a soca show in the south of the island two years ago.
Meanwhile. the sentence hearing of murder convict Peter Duncan is also
expected to take place during the assizes. |
