The three persons appointed to the Upper House by the interest groups in Grenada said that their main responsibilities will be to ensure that the organisations they represent benefit fully from any decision made in the country. Keith Clouden was sworn in as the farmers' representative, Aaron Moses, the Human Resource Manager at Cable & Wireless is now representing the private sector and Chester Humphrey, the President-General of the powerful Technical and Allied Workers Union (TAWU) is again the representative of the Grenada Trades Union Council (TUC). Clouden, a well known young farmer, said that he was
extremely pleased to be the farmers' representative and it was a position
that he had been seeking for the last seven years. He gave assurances that when the time comes for him to make decisions he will vote with his conscience so that at the end of the day, the agriculture sector in Grenada will be the beneficiary. Clouden, the brother of former Senator and Barrister at-Law Anslem Clouden promised to articulate the need for concession for farmers on items such as fertilizers and farming equipment. He spoke also of wanting to see a vibrant national farmers association, that will not only represent the interest of the farming community in Grenada but the fishing industry as well. Private Sector representative Aaron Moses, who was also appointed Deputy President of the Senate, sees his new role as pursuing the continued growth and development of the country. Moses said it is the hope of the private sector that there will be equity and fairness in economic activities, and to ensure that the right policies are out in place and adhered to for the future development of Grenada. The Labour Representative who has been a member of the Upper House for the past fourteen years also gave assurances to continue championing the cause of the working class in the country. Sen. Humphrey expressed the hope that representatives of the interest groups will collaborate and review legislation together before making a decision. He felt that after this is done the members should vote on what is best for the organisations they represent and the country on the whole. A date is still to be announced for the first working session of the Senate. |
