As Grenada prepares to commemorate 30 years of Independence on February 7, a Commission will be established with the responsibility of identifying and recommending sites and monuments to honour outstanding citizens. This was announced last Friday by Governor-General Sir Daniel Williams, in delivering the Throne Speech at the ceremonial state opening of the first session of the seventh Parliament. Sir Daniel said that outstanding citizens from the past and present will be honoured. Meanwhile, in addition to the traditional activities of a Military Parade and National Rally on Independence Day, the National Celebrations Committee will be introducing some new activities for the celebrations. These include National Colours Day on February 6, when citizens will be urged to wear national colours during the day, and an International Evening and fireworks display, a Jamboree celebrating local culture and food on February 7 and a Garden Tea Party and National Dress Competition on February 14. Celebrations planned for the 30th anniversary also include the revival of the Independence Senior Calypso Competition, which is scheduled for January 30. Independence will be celebrated under the theme: "Grenada: Recognising our worth, celebrating our achievements, exploring new frontiers". Grenada obtained Independence from Great Britain on February 7, 1974 under the Grenada United Labour Party (GULP) government of late Prime Minister Sir Eric Matthew Gairy. |
