With ongoing preparations for Grenada's 30th Independence Anniversary next month, residents of River Road will soon be engaged in a beautification project. At a meeting held Monday night, the residents agreed to begin their beautification campaign with a clean-up drive on the weekend of January 24 and 25. The decoration of the surrounding villages will commence on January 31. The community has also undertaken the task of cleaning up Queen's Park Ground Two following the devastating floods last month. The National Stadium, which is located at Queen's Park, has been the home of major sporting and cultural activities and the residents agreed to hold ongoing clean-up programmes to ensure that the community remains clean. On Independence Day, February 7, the River Road Community will provide the elderly with a brunch at the River Road Hard Court. Other matters discussed at Monday's meeting, which was attended by Parliamentary Representative for the Town of St George, Peter David, included an After-School Education Programme which will provide academic and technical skills to members of the community. A number of working professionals have already indicated an interest to assist in this programme. They are also seeking the use of the Community Centre and the lighting of the playing field and hard court for evening activities. Meantime, a delegation from the community is expected to meet shortly with Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports and Community Development, Veda Bruno-Victor o discuss the management of the Community Centre. Residents also raised concerns about a road which is being constructed near to the playing field. The road is intended for use by Gravel and Concrete and Emulsion Corporation for the new Quarry at Queen's Park. However, residents felt that it's too close to the playing field and poses a danger to the young ones. |
