INDEPENDENCE MESSAGE from the Local Director of the Organisation of Ameircan States (OAS), Francis Mc Barnette.

The Organisation of American States takes the opportunity to extend best wishes to the Government and People of Grenada on the happy occasion of the 30th Anniversary of Independence. This is certainly a proud moment for this country which has had its many challenges since achieving its independence in 1974.

Grenada, as a nation state, however, has survived and today has taken its place among the hemispheric family of nations that is the Organization of American States. After thirty years, the country has a strong democratic tradition and the primacy of the rule of law.

The Government and People of Grenada must continue to use the experiences of the last thirty years to reflect and to draw lessons which will foster unity and harvest the full potential of the nation.

Life of small, open island developing countries in a globalised world can be at best challenging. But small can be beautiful. Small need not necessarily mean vulnerable; for Grenada, as for other small island developing states, small must mean flexible, resilient and ready to seize and to create opportunities.

The Organisation of American States stands as a partner with Grenada, its Government and People and remains committed to assist in improving the standard of living and quality of life of all its people.

The Organisation of American States, therefore, takes the opportunity to congratulate the Government and People on this 30th Anniversary of Independence and wishes them good fortune and continued peace and prosperity.
