The Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan has granted five-year diplomatic scholarships to four Grenadians to pursue undergraduate studies in Taiwan.

The four students are Tricia Reuben, Kellon Bubb, Shamfa Joseph and Leon Marrast. Ms. Reuben and Mr. Bubb will both pursue a bachelor's degree in Mass Communications at the Chengchi University and the Ming Chuan University respectively while Ms. Joseph and Mr. Marrast will both study science and technology at the Ming Chuan University in Taiwan. The students will learn the Chinese language during the first year.

Ms Reuben, a reporter of the Grenada Broadcasting Network said she feels very honoured to be among the first group of Grenadian students to study in Taiwan. She said it will be a great challenge to learn the Chinese language during the first year and she is quite ready for that experience.

Mr. Marrast who is a Physics Teacher at the St. Joseph's Convent is elated about his opportunity to study in Taiwan.

He said it's a great privilege for him and that he has chosen the area of science and technology to further develop his career. A total of six hundred and twenty two students from eighty-eight countries will benefit from the scholarship program.

The main purpose of the program is to provide foreign students with opportunities to pursue their studies in Taiwan and to increase their understanding of Taiwan's development.

The four Grenadian students will leave Grenada on August 26, 2004.
