The timely response by some of the nation's firemen and volunteer fire-fighters prevented a fire from spreading in one of the busiest shopping blocks in the nation's capital on Saturday night.

More than two dozen fire-fighters and volunteers responded at very short notice to an alarm that a fire had started in the Demerara Mutual Life Insurance building on Granby Street, St. George's.

GRENADA TODAY was told that the fire started just after 7.00 p.m and several persons in the area soon alerted the Fire Station at the Carenage.

Up to the time of going to press, it was still not clear what was responsible for the fire.

Police investigators are currently working on the theory that the fire could have resulted from an electrical problem in the building.

However, within minutes of receiving the call, the fire-fighters and volunteers arrived on the scene and used their equipment to bring the fire under control.

Shortly after the arrival of the fire-fighters, a team of electrical engineers from the Grenada Electricity Company Ltd (GRENLEC) were seen in the immediate area disconnecting the current (power) on most of the nearby streets.
