Leader of the Opposition in the Upper House, Senator George Prime is calling on the Keith Mitchell-led government to avoid using "fluctuating overdrafts" to conduct business in the country. He made the comment during debate on a Motion presented by Leader of Government Business in the Senate, Minister of State for Information, Einstein Louison during a sitting on Tuesday. Parliament had earlier given Finance Minister Anthony Boatswain authority to borrow by means of fluctuating overdraft from a commercial bank operating in the country sums not exceeding forty million ($40.000.000). The government says the money is needed to meet requirements for the period September 18, 2004 to March 17, 2005. Sen. Prime told the Senate sitting that fluctuating overdrafts must not be promoted or encouraged since the monies obtained by this means will have to be repaid in the future. Prime who is the Deputy Political Leader of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) charged that the ruling New National Party (NNP) government of Dr. Mitchell lacks planning, administration and consultation. He pointed out that every time government speaks about economic development they do so in the context of what the eyes can see but that they often fail to address what the eyes cannot see. Prime warned the government side about coming to sittings of the senate with Motions and Bills with the sole intention of getting the Upper House to rubber stamp them. He charged that if the Mitchell government had been doing as well as it was boasting with the finances of the country then there would not be no need to go by means of fluctuating overdrafts. However, Leader of Government Business, Sen. Einstein Louison who tabled the Motion pointed out that visitors to the country are pleased with the progress Grenada has made over the years under the current government. He told the sitting that all of the monies guaranteed may not be put to use at the same time but will be left as security in the event something happens. Sen. Louison brushed aside suggestions from some Senators that government needs to be more transparent in its dealings. He said that prudent management of the economy has been the hallmark of this administration, pointing out that government will continue its infrastructural development policy of recent years. |
