Speculation is rife that Governor-General Sir Daniel Williams will appoint a one-man Commission of Inquiry to look into the "2000 Switzerland Briefcase Issue" involving Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell.

Sources close to the ruling New National Party (NNP) government said that the Commission would be similar to that of the Justice Lindsay Worrell commission that was set up by late Prime Minister Herbert Blaize in 1989.

Worrell, a Barbadian retired high court judge, was appointed as the sole commissioner to look into the operations of several statutory bodies and government departments that fell under the portfolio of Dr. Mitchell who then held the post of Minister of Works and Public Utilities.

According to a well-placed source, it was highly likely that Sir Daniel will disclose the name of the Commissioner soon after the carnival season. He could not shed any light on whether the person is a Grenaidan or non-national.

There have been calls from a number of quarters in the country for an independent inquiry into the 2000 visit made by Prime Minister Mitchell to Switzerland with two members of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF).

The Miami-based Offshore Alert alleged that Dr. Mitchell visited the home of German fraduster Eric Resteiner and collected US$500, 000.00 in a briefcase as a bribe for a diplomatic appointment.
The article was based on an affidavit given by Timothy Bass, the former Chief of bodyguard for Resteiner who alleged that he video-taped the exchange on the instructions of his boss.

Prime Minister Mitchell has consistently denied the allegation but admitted that he met with Resteiner who gave him $US15, 000.00 to cover the expenses of a trip to several European States and Kuwait.

The Mitchell government has threatened to use "the full force" of the law against local media houses that report on the allegations made in the Offshore Alert publication.
