Football in Grenada has received a short in the arm following the signing of a three year contract between local mobile provider Digicel and the Grenada Football Association (GFA) at a ceremony last Friday.

Country Manager for Digicel Patricia Maher signed the agreement for the company while President of the GFA Ashley Folkes did the same for the Association at a ceremony held at the National Stadium in Queen's Park.

The agreement is worth $120,000 and will go towards the sponsorship of the GFA Premiere League Division Championship.
Maher also presented a Sony Erickson Z mobile telephone to Folkes for his use locally as well as his travel overseas on football business.

Speaking at the ceremony, Maher said football is the perfect medium to enhance Digicel's brand throughout the tri-island state.
She pointed out that the signing marks the beginning of a three year relationship with the GFA with the aim being to raise the standard of football in the country as well as create more excitement in the sport.

GFA President Ashley Folkes thanked Digicel for the timely sponsorship and expressed the hope that other co-operate businesses would get on board and assist in the promotion of the games since it promotes youth development.

General Secretary of the GFA Victor Daniel who made brief remarks disclosed that the money will allow the football body to increase the prize monies for the winners in the tournament.

He said it will also help to promote the game in the parish of St. David's as well as on the sister isles of Carriacou and Petit Martinique which have no teams presently in this tournament.

The Premiere League which started on June 26 is into its 6th round of competition started on June 26 and has representation from five of the parishes on the island. The present defending champion is Hurricane from St. Mark's.
