The female athletes of the St. David's Catholic Secondary School (SDCSS) have once again proven to be unbeatable at the annual inter-collegiate track and field meet at the national sporting stadium at Queen's Park, St. George's.

The girls from St. David's won the games for the seventh straight year in a row to finish on top at the 24th annual Scotia Bank track and field competition held last Thursday and Friday at the stadium complex.

The SDCSS girls won the competition by amassing a total of 105 points, eight ahead of their closest rival, St. Joseph Convent, St. Andrew's who finished the two day competition on 97 points.

The third spot was taken by St. Andrew's Anglican Secondary School (SAASS) who scored 54 points, followed by Anglican High School (AHS) 54 points, St. Joseph Convent, St. George's 39 and Happy Hill Secondary on 25 points.

The Chief athletics coach of the winning school, Denise Williams told GRENADA TODAY that the team entered the games knowing and understanding what was needed to be done in order to win the championships.

According to Coach Williams, she instilled in the SDCSS girls the need to work hard for the games. "We do not boast, we operate as a family and share a lot of things together and my athletes knew definitely what they had to do and where they had to make up the points...", she said.

"...They knew that they had to work as a team and besides the Lord was on our side", added Williams who has been coaching the school for the past ten years.

This newspaper understands that two athletes from SDCSS, Nerisa Phillip and Christelle Collins have been selected to join the national team for the CARIFTA track & field games to be held this weekend in Bermuda.

In the boys division, there was tie for the first position between defending champions, Mc. Donald's College (MDC) and the Grenada Boys Secondary School (GBSS) who both ended on 128 points.

On day one of the inter-col meet, GBSS held a twenty points lead over MDC and the St. Andrew's Anglican Secondary School (SAASS). The Presentation Brothers College (PBC), and Grenville Secondary School (GSS) followed close behind.

GBSS maintained the lead up to the tea interval on the final day of the meet but Mc Donald made a major surge after the break when it won four events in a row including two relays and two single events. The GBSS had no answer and saw the defending champions equalizing on points.

Final scores in the Boys' Division: MDC & (GBSS (128 pts), (SAASS - 59 pts, and Grenville Secondary School (GSS) 55 pts.
The final day of the meet was marred by a few violent incidents and warranted the attention of the security forces in particular members of the recently formed Strike Squad of the Royal Grenada Police Force (RGPF).

Several students and members of the public were seen throwing plastic containers (bottles) mainly water and busta containers across the bleachers. One student dressed in a GBSS uniform had to be carried away by security officials after he was struck in the face with a water container (bottle).

There are also unconfirmed reports that security officials had to be called in to mann one of the main gates leading into the stadium after the lock was reportedly cut.
