Cable
& Wireless will continue providing services to Grenada and the rest of
the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) in spite of the
unprecedented changes and challenges which it now faces in the new
telecommunications environment.
This commitment was given by newly appointed Grenadian General
Manager of the telecommunications giant, Grenadian Carlyle Roberts.
He was speaking at the annual
dinner of the Media Workers Association of Grenada (MWAG) which was held
at the Tout Bagay Restaurant on the Carenage last Saturday.
"As one OECS official said.
competition is here to stay. I want to let you know this evening that our
organisation, Cable & Wireless, which has been here for a long time,
is also here to stay" Roberts told the gathering.
The MWAG and C&W have had
what can be described as a cordial relationship over the years with the
former, benefiting significantly from several contributions.
Roberts welcomed the opportunity
to speak to media practitioners, saying that they are the ones responsible
for shaping decision making in the country.
He told the gathering that
C&W is in a very different telecommunication
environment from a year ago.
"Our approach to business
and to service in Grenada has evolved to meet the new challenges posed by
the changes that are now around us" the General Manager of the
telecommunications giant noted.
He said
it would be fool hardy for the company to continue doing business
the same way, while the rules of engagement and the environment around
them have changed.
"It would be tantamount to
being in reverse, while the rest of the community moves on" he noted.
"Today we are governed by a new legal framework that calls on
us to develop an operating structure that has implications for the
community we serve" Roberts stressed. He pointed out that the company
is aware of the pressures brought about by the liberalisation of the
telecommunications industry, how it will impact on relationships,
customers, employees and the general community.
"However, under the new
rules we have little choice, as we are bound by the laws and regulations
that have been placed before us", the C&W General Manager
indicated. Cable & Wireless has worked
with the governments of the OECS to bring our operation as a sole provider
to an end" he stated.
Roberts said however that they
have been allowed little input in shaping the new environment, which has
been led by the various bodies established by its partners in
liberalisation, these bring the governments of the OECS countries, under
the agreement signed last May.
"If
we are in a position to make a request of the media, then our only request
is that we continue to enjoy a relationship that allows fairness and
mutual respect" the C & W General Manager stated.
A relationship that allows us to
answer your questions whether they be on current issues facing our company
or on your telecommunications
needs" Roberts concluded.
