Another
political party on the island has hit the campaign trail as talks of early
General Elections spread across the country.
The Grenada United Labour Party (GULP) brought
its political platform to a public meeting at the Birch Grove
junction last Sunday.
Heading the team was Opposition Leader and Deputy Political Leader
of the GULP Michael Baptiste, the Parliamentary Representative for the
Andrew's South -West Constituency.
Moments before the meeting was scheduled to start, supporters from
the ruling New National Party (NNP) administration
flooded the constituency, knocking on doors and going from house to house
to cement support for the party in the area.
The NNP has already identified Parliamentary Representative in the
Ministry of Gender and
Family Affairs Senator Yolande Joseph to contest
the seat for the ruling administration against the incumbent.
The GULP platform comprised Senators Michael Andrew and Clarence
Rapier, Trustee Cleopatra Wardally, Public Relations Officer Bartholomew
Herry among others.
Addressing the gathering Senator Andrew noted that it was only a
labour government headed by former Prime Minister Sir Eric Gairy that was
responsible for the construction of a number of schools on the island.
He boasted about the former Prime Minister being responsible for
bringing the first University, the St. George's University School of
Medicine (SGUSOM) to the country which is now utilised by many locals on
the island.
Andrew stated that the GULP is prepared to march forward with a
vision for Grenada. He encouraged supporters to continue giving their
support to the party since it represents a symbol of stability in the
country.
According to the Senator, a Barrister-at Law by profession, he is
happy to be back home with the GULP after he was thrown out of another
political party because he stood up for grass roots people.
He
criticised the recently opened General Hospital in St. George's saying
that it makes no sense in having a new facility when locals cannot access
the services due to the exorbitant fees.
"
A GULP government will reduce the excessive fees when we get into
office" Andrew promised.
The
Senator noted that Grenada cannot do like the United States, Canada and
other countries by taxing its citizens to pay for health care.
He
noted that the bigger nations have social security programme and other
benefits and so they can pay to cushion the cost of health care for their
citizens.
The
Barrister at Law by profession also issued a word of caution to the
nation's young people who are of the view that the New National
Party(NNP)administration is sympathetic to their cause.
He
told them that the ruing party is not for them since they have mortgaged
the future of the country due to their reckless spending, by
guaranteeing millions in loans from lending institutions which they will
one day have to pay back.
