A
Well-Known Basketball official and Juror of Grand Anse in St.
George’s has reported a series of death threats made on his
life, by notorious bandit Sheldon "Dutch" Bain, Zoid
Clement, Kenton Phillip and Elvon "Plank" Barry, all of
whom are charged with Murder as a result of the death by shooting
of 45 yr. old Omelia Roberts of Belmont in St. George’s.
The
man, who is a member of the juror
pool, but is presently a witness for the prosecution in the Omelia
Roberts murder inquiry last Thursday told the Court presided over
by Grenada’s Chief Magistrate Patricia Mark, that all of the
defendants, and in particular "Dutch" has being making
death treats to him.
He
explained that he reported the matter to the Criminal
Investigation Department (CID) in St. George’s and that he takes
the treats seriously. He further told the Court that a well known
female Trafficker, who has close ties with "Dutch" has
also being inquiring about his telephone number and address.
Magistrate
Mark after learning about the alleged death-threats, said publicly
that this is a very serious matter and called on the police not to
take such threats lightly. At last Thursday’s hearing,
Government Pathologist Dr. Lazor Vigor, who performed the autopsy
on the deceased, as well as this particular witness gave evidence
to the Court.
There
have been reports that "Dutch" continues to have a very
close relationship with the Trafficker and her daughter, who was
present in Court when the witness broke his silence on the matter
publicly.
Local
Police investigators during their investigation into the death of
Mrs. Roberts had published a "Wanted-Man" notice and
sought the assistance of the Trafficker, who it is said had turned
him in to the police.
Within
an hour of "Dutch's" arrival at the (CID) he was slapped
with the charge of Murder. Police insiders said that he was the
master-mind of the failed robbery in which Roberts was gunned down in
the presents of her daughter at her Belmont home. A
reliable source also told Grenada
Today that the Trafficker had called the home of a
lady who is a friend of the witness, inquiring about his where-abouts.
A team
of officers from the Special Services Unit (SSU) were seen
providing security at the Court, since ‘’Dutch’’ is
believed to have close ties with several bandits and gangs in the
country.
It is
no secret that Grenada has no witness protection program in place,
as is the case in other countries and this makes it very easy for
hard-core criminals and their associates to intimidate
and possibly
kill witnesses and their families.
Such a situation can lead to many persons who may witness all sorts of
crimes to refrain from providing the police with reliable information,
which can lead to the arrest of those responsible and bring them
to justice.
